Exceedingly good, much like a Mr Kipling cake.

Ah the Nintendo Wii. The sexiest looking console of this generation but at the very same time the weakest, perhaps it suffers from Gok Wan syndrome? Never the less when a Nintendo Wii game does captivate me, I get goose bumps down my spine, it’s such a rare occasion that it actually happens, that I positively wet myself in excitement. Though the game released during the early lifecycle of Nintendo’s shiny white box, it was a game I overlooked in fear that it would bare too similar experience to other games of its nature. What am I talking about? Mario Strikers Charged. For the purpose of this review, I’m going to call it MSC. Yes, I know it sounds like some revolutionary mobile phone communication software, but hell if I’m going to spell it out in full again!

So how does this game feel? It’s arcade in styling, physics and action. Its sound track has eerie connotations to well known songs by Jamaroqui and Diana Ross but without the vocals (Seriously, just listen to Upside Down) and with the usual Mario roster fanfare it has all the depth you’d expect from the franchise such as power moves for each character and power-ups to be used on the pitch itself. It’s with that, that it blows the competition away, but what is the competition? Well, admittedly much of it resides on the PS2 and former system Gamecube, in games such as Red Card and Sega Soccer Slam. Whilst both games admirable, they both look weak in comparison to MSC. So if you liked those games, you’ll like this too. For those that want the realism, stay away because it just isn’t here and neither should it be.

You maybe asking how much beef, MSC can pack into its price tag. Unfortunately it’s much like a Pepperami. The game itself lacks plenty of game modes and even the offline mode becomes stale regardless of the plethora of special moves and colourful stadiums there are on offer. Allot of this is because there isn’t much to work for, other than winning cups and when your 18-0 up against your opponents the thrill factor doesn’t provide. It’s not until you start cracking the difficulty up (which you get that as a default option) that things become more exciting. Each captain has a special shot, which puts the game into a cut scene and has your hand to eye co-ordination working maximum to try and save multiple balls from hitting the back of the net. It’s fun and works much better when the game is closely contested, but there is something slightly monotonous about watching the same cut scene with the same music, over and over again, if there had been an option to not play the FMV and just see the balls spray into the net, it would have been a clever addition which would probably have saved the games longevity a little more.

Online the game plays without little issue and there is still a half decent community for this title around. I was hoping that there would be a foul system which had you saving penalties in the same principle of the super shot, but unfortunately not. The game has no rules system at all, which I would have liked to have seen, just for the sheer fact of being able to take penalties or surviving the match with 4 players. Along with the obligatory Vs mode and tournament affair, you do get a challenge mode to spice things up a bit and it’s a nice distraction from playing a 6 match round robin over and over again. Don’t get me wrong this game is a good laugh, it has some really nice character and the control system is easier to pick up than most modern football titles, but much like a Mr Kipling cake is exceedingly good, you don’t tend to eat them often, but when you do, they are to be savoured, much like this game.

    this game is great, it works very well and deliver. The only complaint would be the artistic design in the menus, wich ive found too ‘evil’
    Great versus game, online, hard as hell on singleplayer.
